Laid Off New York Associates — What to Do?

If you are an associate asking yourself how to land another job in the midst of this meltdown, take solace in the fact that you are in great company. As in all times of economic calamity, there are great deals for those buyers willing to let go of some money earned in easier times. The trick is…

…figuring out who the buyers are, whether you bring to the table whatever they are looking to buy, and whether you want to jump aboard even if they are eager to pay for you.

Here are two keys to successfully navigating this storm: don’t panic, and find a good guide to advise you.

Ben James of Law360 has recently wriiten an excellent article on this subject, excepts of which are posted in the Media section of this site. I would urge you to take a look as his piece.

You advise that we should seek out the help of a “good” guide. Most headhunters I speak with know virtually nothing about the firms they claim to represent. Are there really any “good” headhunters out there?

I agree, Harper. Regrettably, as I am certain you know, legal recruiting is not a field that has traditionally attracted the most ambitious, talented and driven people; on the contrary the vast majority of headhunters have no serious interest in the legal market and offer prospective candidates little more than the ability to read lists of openings to prospective candidates. But there are a few good headhunters out there. Don’t be afraid to ask a headhunter for references — if they are truly the real deal they will have no difficulty providing you with some good ones in short order.
